Q: Last week, while shopping in my local supermarket, I noticed that quite a few products had no prices on them. Isn’t this illegal? What action can be taken?

A: Yes, according to the Price Indication Regulations, all products offered for sale must be clearly indicated with a price. This should be displayed on the product itself or, if there is more than one item of the same kind, size, type or brand, it is enough to put a price tage on the shelf. Moreover, the price displayed has to be the final one the consumer is asked to pay.

In case of products sold by weight or volume, the selling price must also show a unit price – the price the product would cost for a given quantity of the product, such as one litre of fruit juice or one kilogramme of cheese.

Consumers who, while shopping, notice that prices are not indicated as the law stipulates should assert their rights by reporting these traders to the Enforcement Directorate within the Office for Consumer Affairs by calling 2395 2000 or by e-mailing info@mccaa.org.mt.
