I refer to the feature (June 21) on hospitalisation statistics due to excessive alcohol intake.

The National Alcohol Policy recently launched for public consultation is a massive step forward and I hope that the proposals contained in it are eventually passed and enforced.

Alcohol use and abuse by minors remains a serious problem. Early use of alcohol can, if not curtailed, lead to problems later in life. These are factually and empirically proven the world over. “Catch ’em young” as the saying goes. Education and enforcement are fundamental if this is to be avoided. The government and the enforcement agencies must hammer out this message, continuously and over a long stretch of time.

I would also appreciate if the Sense Group would also relay the message that, although drinking sensibly is very wise, this does not apply to persons of a tender age, who should be advised to stay away from alcohol until late adolescence, at least.
