This year’s offering from Teatru Astra in Gozo is operatic favourite Aida.

All the great ingredients which make up Italian opera can be found in Aida: grandeur and intimacy, poignancy and implacability, vengeance and redemption, love and envy. It is indeed the triumph of woman.

Its appeal transcends all cultural barriers and mindsets. Verdi’s inspired score is ravishing and engaging, with superb choral writing alternating with unforgettable solo arias and fine concertati.

Furthermore, this year’s cast includes Silvia dalla Benetta (soprano) as Aida, Devid Cecconi (baritone) as Amonasro, Carlo Colombara (bass) as Ramfis, Sanja Anastasia (mezzo-soprano) as Amneris, Antonino Interisano (tenor) as Radames, Petri Lindroos (bass) as the King, Georgina Stalbow (soprano) as the High Priestess and Frans Mangion (tenor) as the messenger.

■ The production is being staged on Thursday and Saturday at 7.30pm at the Teatru Astra in Victoria. Tickets and further information are available from www.teatruastra.org.mt.
