With the 2016 local triathlon season well and truly over, the recently formed Elite Sports Triathlon Team has decided to wrap up the satisfactory end of its first season with the organisation of a blood donation campaign aptly titled ‘Save lives’.

While the team’s name might not ring so familiar, the driving force behind it needs no introduction. Danica Bonello Spiteri, who manages and coaches the team, has clocked up a substantial amount of accolades and titles in the triathlon scene over the past 20 years.

“We have all been given the gift of life as well as enjoying good health that allows us to practise our beloved sport. This month will is an off season for us, when we will not be training to allow our bodies and minds to rest and recover,” she said.

“As a team, we felt that this is the right time to give back something precious and life-saving to people in less fortunate circumstances than ourselves – something that cannot be bought with money or created by man.”

“Being honest, I have never donated blood but being in the medical profession, it is not the first time that I ordered it for my patients. Donating blood saves lives and gives hope.”

If donating for the first time, donors are to be aged between 18 and 63.

Seventeen-year-olds must have parental/guardian consent. For more information, visit https://health.gov.mt/en/nbts/Pages/Become-a-Donor/become-a-donor.aspx or by e-mailing coach@elitetriteam.com.

‘Save lives’ will take place today from 9am to noon at the Blood Donation Unit at St Luke’s Hospital in Guardamangia.
