October 15, 2016 will surely be a date to remember in the St Aloysius’ College Scout Group’s history calendar, as the group officially celebrated its 100th year.

On this occasion, President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca praised the Scouts’ movement and their commitment on achieving such an important milestone.

A new hall was also inaugurated for the centenary, which will be used for Scouts so that they learn essential life skills such as first aid, knotting, setting up a fire and map reading.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled in the presence of College rector Jimmy Bartolo at the group’s headquarters in Birkirkara, after which the Scouts organised a gang show with the involvement of all the group’s sections (Cub Scouts, Scouts, Ventures and Rovers).

The Group Scout Leader Edward Cassola explained that a lot of planning and coordination between the group’s various sections was involved to come up with a show of singing, music and acting. He added that “the show was truly enjoyed by all those who attended. The storyline was about two Scouts who travel through time from one era to another, and each time, discover one of the origins of scouting. The show included a selection of traditional campfire songs”.

Edward Cassola explained that this also served as an occasion where the older and younger group members worked together with a common objective in mind.

The group’s present and past members attended this event, together with representatives of the Scout Association of Malta, including Chief Commissioner Leslie Bonnici and Chief Scout George Cassar.

The evening started off with a celebration of Holy Mass to highlight the spiritual aspect of scouting.

The St Aloysius’ College Scout Group was set up on October 16, 1916 and is based at the College grounds in Birkirkara.
