The Vienna Young Philharmonic Orchestra (Junge Philharmonie Wien) is giving two concerts this weekend in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund at the Manoel Theatre.

Tonight’s programme includes Joseph Haydn’s L’Isola disabitata and Joseph Vella’s Il-Kebbies tal-Fanali, both featuring soprano Miriam Cauchi, Franz Schubert and Arnold Schönberg lieder, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concert for Clarinet and Orchestra A-Dur, K 622 with soloist Daniel Ottensamer on clarinet.

Tomorrow’s programme features Otto Nicolai’s Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (The Merry Wives of Windsor), Gustav Mahler’s Nightmusic I and II of Symphony Nr. 7, two pieces from Richard Strauss, Das Rosenband, featuring Maltese soprano Nicola Said and Franz Schubert’s Incidental Music to Rosamunde with Christine Dalli, mezzosoprano.

The participation of this youth orchestra is a unique opportunity for music lovers in Malta. The Junge Philharmonie Wien is in fact defined as Austria’s elite orchestra of young talents musically trained in the typical Viennese tradition based on Mozart and Mahler.

This orchestral nucleus is in fact that which produces the majority of virtuosos that subsequently qualify to form part of the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna Symphonic orchestras. It was founded in 1997 by conductor Michael Lessky together with other foremost musicians of these aforementioned orchestras.

The orchestra has developed a broad international repertoire ranging from opera to jazz and modern music.

The Junge Philharmonie Wien consists of 320 members who qualify as a result of auditions taking place yearly all over Austria. During their rehearsal and practical sessions they are monitored regularly by veteran experienced musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic to ensure the best effective musical development. A 48-strong orchestral complement will be performing in Malta.
