The Ħamrun Chocolate Festival is taking place tonight in the Maltese town mostly associated with this popular culinary delight.

Although as yet undocumented, it is said that during the sovereignty of the Knights of St John, under the rule of Grand Master Perellos, cocoa beans were stored in Ħamrun, particularly in the area known as tas-Samra. Till today, one can purchase Unica 1658, a chocolate dating back to 1658 and based on Gianfrancesco Buonamico’s original recipe and now the official chocolate for Valletta 2018.

The Ħamrun Chocolate Festival brings together traditions from the past and blends them with innovative uses of chocolate as an ingredient for food and art. Festival-goers may delight in viewing a six-metre model of the Titanic and a 1.5-metre model of the traditional Maltese bus made entirely out of chocolate.

■ Organised by the Ħamrun Local Council, the festival runs from 7pm onwards along St Joseph High Road.
