From today, all those territories that host an Italian embassy and cultural institute will be promoting Italian language and culture through the Italian Week in the World.

This year’s theme is ‘Italian and Creativity: Brands and Traditions, Fashion and Design’ and kicks off today at 6.30pm with two presentations at the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta.

Professor Nicoletta Maraschio will deliver a presentation entitled L’Italiano ‘creativo’ tra moda e design (the creative use of Italian in the world of fashion and design) while L’Italiano e la creatività: i marchi commerciali, gli slogan e le insegne dei negozi (Italian and creativity: brands, slogans and shop signs) is the focus of professor Joseph Brincat’s talk.

The Italian Week in the World continues tomorrow and on Wednesday at the St Thomas Moore College Senior School in Santa Luċija from 9am to 1.30pm with an interesting exhibition prepared by the school. Also on Wednesday at 9am at the Sir M. A. Refalo School in Victoria, a seminar will be held titled DesignGOZO: L’influenza Italiana sul design a Gozo (DesignGOZO: Italian influence on design in Gozo).

Organised by the school’s Visual Arts Unit, teachers and scholars specialising in the fields of fashion, graphics and architecture will take part in the seminar.

The film-documentary Bellissime (the beautiful ones), directed by Giovanna Gagliardo in 2004, will be screened on Thursday at 6.30pm at the Institute. The film, in Italian with English subtitles, is about Italian women during the 20th century and features Lina Cavalieri, Eleonora Duse, Francesca Bestini, Luisella Boghi, Doris Durante, Anna Magnani, Monica Vitti and Bice Valori.

■ Entrance to all events is free. The Italian Week in the World is organised by the Italian Cultural Institute in Malta under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy, through an agreement between the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Accademia della Crusca.
