Monique Borg Inguanez was recently awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics by Leeds University’s Department of Statistics. Her research involved the study of regularisation techniques in regression analysis.
In her dissertation Dr Borg Inguanez consolidated and extended theoretical results in the literature on regularisation methods and explored their performance when applied on real data sets. Such methods are applied in various areas of research such as the development of drugs, and the food and chemical industry.
Regression analysis is a collection of data analytical techniques used to investigate interrelationships between a set of variables.
Data sets with a large number of variables are increasingly important in applications of regression analysis.
But most traditional statistical regression estimation techniques do not perform well with such data. Thus a need for regularisation arises and various regularisation methods have been suggested.
Dr Borg Inguanez obtained a first class Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics, Operations Research and Mathematics from the University of Malta.
She later read for a Master’s in Statistics at the University of Malta where she graduated with distinction. She is currently a lecturer at the University’s Department of Statistics and Operations Research.
Her Ph.D was partly sponsored by a scholarship grant from the Malta Government Scholarship Scheme (MGSS).
