An exhibition opening today aims to highlight Maltese tradition and culture through photography.

The exhibition Arts and Culture Through the Lens includes over 50 photos from some 15 different Maltese photographers covering all sorts of aspects of Maltese life, including the Maltese village festa, carnival, Good Friday rituals, Maltese Christmas traditions, artisans and craftsmen, historic re-enactments and more.

The project aims to encourage increased participation in photography in the community through informative talks and workshops. It will also serve as a platform for people interested in the art of photography to interact with professional photographers and enhance their skills as well as promote Maltese culture.

Four workshops of one hour each are also being held. Today’s lectures are From Finland to Madagascar: Two Photography Extremes at 9am delivered by Johan Siggesson and Introduction to Aerial Photography with Steve Zammit Lupi at 10.30am.

Two more lectures follow on Saturday, October 22, with Chris Azzopardi talking about Architecture and Theatre Photography at 9am and Fireworks Photography with Bertie Decelis at 10.30am.

■ Entrance to the exhibition and workshops is free of charge. They are being held at Palazzo Santa Marija on the church square of Mqabba. The exhibition runs until Sunday, October 23, and is open from 6.30pm to 9pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm on the last Sunday. The project is organised by the Executive Committee and Kummissjoni WEB within the Society of St Mary and King George V Band Club of Mqabba and is funded by the Malta Voluntary Organisation fund Small Initiative Scheme (SIS).
