Spazju Kreattiv is tonight presenting L’Avenir (Things to Come), one of the shortlisted films for the Lux Film Prize.

The annual event, organised by the European Parliament, awards the best film produced in Europe. Besides promoting European cinema, the Lux Film Prize also serves as a cultural platform which transcends geographical and linguistic borders in order to create a European public sphere.

L’Avenir revolves around the burning questions of happiness, of having a vocation, as well as the value of folly and of established ways of living. It is a heart-cradling, post-divorce drama directed by Mia Hansen-Løve that depicts not only one individual’s search for new avenues but also asks if and to what extent philosophy can be applied to our everyday life. Hansen-Løve won the Silver Bear for best director at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival with this film.

The plot revolves around Nathalie (Isabelle Huppert), a teacher of philosophy at a high school in Paris. She is passionate about her job and particularly enjoys passing on the pleasure of thinking, her love for knowledge to her students and those around her.

Married and with two children, she divides her time between her family, former students and her incessantly possessive mother.

One day, Nathalie’s husband announces he is leaving her for another woman. With freedom thrust upon her, Nathalie must reinvent her life.

■ The film screens tonight at St James Cavalier at 8pm with a repeat on Saturday, November 5, at 9pm. It is suitable for those aged 12 and over. For more information, visit http://kreattivita.org .
