I refer to the letter by Mario Dingli ‘Lazy Corner’ (September 30).

Allow me to state that the Lazy Corner is nothing else than the pub at the corner of Manwel Dimech Street with St Helen Street. Today, it is the Sliema Wanderers’ Supporters Club.

As this pub has a parapet and is situated in a location where it has a lot of sun both in summer and in winter, the parapet used to be patronised by a good number of people, mostly elderly, idling their time away, just enjoying the sun during the day.

Further down the road, opposite the Bank of Valletta, there are apartments, which, mainly after World War II were used by the British Services. Servicemen lived with their families in the area. As these servicemen used to go up and down then Prince of Wales Road, they found it convenient to nickname the pub there the ‘Lazy Corner’ because of the men who used to spend their time there .

By time, the ‘Lazy Corner’ extended to other streets: St Helen, St Henry, Ġafar, Rose and Arcade streets and the whereabouts. One can even describe this area as a ‘township’.

When Sliema people used to argue between them they would speak of those who “come from the ‘Lazy Corner’”, which distinguished a class of people coming from that area from the Sliema elite.

This information was passed on to me by elderly people, though I do not deem it prudent naming them as they have all passed away. They used to live in Sliema in the 1930s and 1940s.
