Spazju Kreattiv will tonight be screening Mustang, the winner of last year’s Lux Film Prize.

The European Parliament awards the Lux Film Prize to the best film produced in Europe every year with the prize celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It is not only intended to promote European cinema but also to serve as a cultural platform which transcends geographical and linguistic borders in order to create a European public sphere.

Mustang will be screened simultaneously across the 28 EU member states in the EU’s official languages. In Malta, this will be preceded by a presentation from this year’s 28 Times Cinema and Lux Film Prize Ambassador, Sarah Chircop. Following the film, a live question and answer session will be streamed and broadcast directly from the EU parliament in Brussels.

Tonight’s film by Deniz Gamze Ergüven takes place in summer in a village in northern Turkey. Lale (played by Güneş Şensoy) and her four sisters are walking home from school, playing innocently with some boys. The immorality of their play sets off a scandal that has unexpected and dire consequences.

Mustang has been nominated for numerous awards, including best foreign language film at the 88th Academy Awards and at the Golden Globes. It has received widespread critical acclaim.

■ The event is free and starts at 8pm at the cinema at St James Cavalier, Valletta. The film is in Turkish with English subtitles, with the question and answer session in English. The event is suitable for those aged 12 and over. For more information, visit http://kreattivita.org .
