The Manoel Theatre is presenting a piano recital by Gabi Sultana on Wednesday with a focus on contemporary composers.

It is the first in the series Wednesdays at the Manoel and includes works by Frank Nuyts, Andy Akiho and Steve Reich arranged by Vincent Corver.

Described in The Sunday Times of Malta as “a demon of energy, yet one of impeccable articulation”, Sultana is a highly acclaimed soloist and chamber musician, especially within the contemporary music scene.

She has performed extensively in Europe, the US and Australia, including at Carnegie Hall in New York in May 2014.

She is currently based in Ghent, Belgium, where, in November 2013, she recorded one of Frank Nuyts’s piano sonatas during a showcase of his solo piano works in De Bijloke. Sultana has performed for the President of Malta as well as for the King and Queen of Belgium.

She is the recipient of several awards, including the Contemporary Music Prize and Outstanding Pianist at the IBLA Grand Prize International Music Competition in Sicily, Italy, in 2013 and the New York University Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò Audience Award from the 2014 IBLA Grand Prize USA.

■ The recital on Wednesday at 8pm is preceded by a talk at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from www.teatrumanoel.com.mt, bookings@teatrumanoel.com.mt or by calling 2124 6389.
