The first European Art Cinema Day is taking place tomorrow in over 1,000 cinemas worldwide and Spazju Kreattiv is bringing the event to Malta at the cinema at St James Cavalier, Valletta.

Tomorrow’s programme includes a screening of Qrempuċu, a short film about a night full of adventures for one little mouse. Starting at 10.30am, this event is supported by the Malta Film Fund and will also include a presentation on the background story by author Trevor Zahra. The film is targeted at children aged seven to 12 and the working language is Maltese.

This will be followed at noon by The Odyssey, a six-minute animated short film which consists of around 6,500 photographs which simulate the life of an adventure-seeking anthropomorphic turtle. Following the screening, creative Ezekiel Vassallo will lead a workshop that will tackle the entire process of production as well as explain how miniature sets are built and puppets made. This event is targeted at those aged 13 and over and entrance is free.

From 5pm to 6pm, four Maltese short films will be screened: Bews il-Baħar, Flutter, Daqqet ix-Xita and The Maltese Fighter. All films were produced with the support of the Malta Film Fund and are in Maltese with English subtitles, except for Flutter which is in English.

The day comes to a close with the screening of The Commune at 8pm. Director Thomas Vinterberg powers a new comedy-drama about human relationships and the unstable foundations of group living. This 2016 film is in Danish with English subtitles and is suitable for those aged 15 and over. It will be shown again on Saturday, October 15 at 9pm.
