Vespers, a double bill of contemporary dance works inspired by plays of Federico García Lorca, is being staged this weekend at Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta.

Blood Wedding is Diciembre Dance Group’s new production based on García Lorca’s eponymous play which fuses contemporary and flamenco dance styles, uniting professional dancers and people from the community, while intertwining Maltese and Spanish cultures.

Under the artistic direction of Lucía Piquero, the work also includes the participation of the Alegría Dance Company, original music by Alberto García and lighting design by Moritz Zavan.

88 Lillies and a Dog is Cienfuegos Danza’s latest work based on Lorca’s polemic The Public. Cienfuegos Danza doubles its original cast, including Malta-based dancers, as a collaborative endeavour for this particular performance.

The work is choreographed by Yoshua Cienfuegos and has original music by Jesús Serrano.

Diciembre Dance Group was founded in 2008 in London but relocated to Malta last year where they continue to pursue work based on new explorations of movement and composition and collaboration between different artists and disciplines.

Yoshua Cienfuegos leads the company Cienfuegos Danza with which he has won several awards, including first prize in the Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid (1999), the National Dance Prize of Costa Rica (2010) and the VIVA ’09/10 award for best choreo-graphic direction.

■ Vespers is being staged tomorrow and on Sunday at 8pm at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, Valletta. Tickets from www.ticketline.com.mt.
