The Crown of Russian Ballet dancers  together with  soloists  from Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre are tomorrow presenting  William Shakespeare’s Veronese tale of love, family feuds and tragedy, set to the music of Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev.  This year marks the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death and the 125th anniversary of Prokofiev’s birth.

Shakespeare’s play needs no introduction with its plot full of romance, intrigue and brawls. Romeo and Juliet fall passionately in love. Unbeknown to them at the time, they belong to rival families who are sworn enemies. The lovers persist and marry in secret but there is to be no happy ending with Romeo killing Juliet’s cousin Tybalt in a fight, resulting in him being banished from the city.

The drama continues to unfold against the sumptuous setting of Renaissance Italy and Prokofiev’s music which underscores the lyric beauty and passion of this beloved ballet’s star-crossed lovers.

■ The ballet is being staged at the Mediterranean Conference Centre tomorrow at 8pm. For more information or to book tickets, visit www.mcc.com.mt.
