An unusual exhibition currently hosted by Blitz in Valletta presents the untold story of a collaboration between two pioneering design companies that led to the production of furniture in Malta that is now highly collectable.

It was in the 1960s that Maltese company Joinwell obtained the licence from Gomme Industries to produce G Plan products locally. This kick-started Malta’s industrial design and furniture manufacture industry. Joinwell remains the only other company licensed to manufacture G Plan products.

The exhibition shines a bright light on our industrial history and the development of the post-war furniture industry in Malta as it bridges contemporary art with contemporary living.

G Plan – Made in Malta features rare and iconic pieces which highlight the timelessness, functionality and innovation of G Plan furniture while telling this important story through the themes of design craftsmanship, process, manufacture, social history and culture.

Visitors to the exhibition can view selected examples produced by Joinwell alongside technical drawings and photographs sourced from archives and private collections as well as oral histories. The focus of the exhibition is historical and educational, employing a contemporary curatorial approach which includes new media and technology and a comprehensive public programme.

Two special events around the exhibition are taking place this Saturday, October 8. Children of all ages are invited to take part in a life drawing session at 2pm, The draw-in chair. Bookings are advised and a small charge is due.

At 5pm, a curator-led tour of the exhibition will take place, followed by an open discussion and questions. This event is free.

■ The exhibition runs until October 28 and is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 10am to 3pm and on Friday and Saturday from 3pm to 7pm. Entrance is free. For more information or to book the children’s session, send an e-mail to nicole@thisisblitz.com or call 9991 3919.
