Laporte: France have called up Aymeric Laporte for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers – a move that is set to end any interest Spain might have had in the uncapped Athletic Bilbao centre-back. The 22-year-old has played for France at various youth levels but, as he is yet to represent his birth nation at senior level, there had been speculation that he could switch allegiances to Spain.

Warburton: Rangers boss Mark Warburton has accepted a one-match touchline ban following an angry confrontation with referee John Beaton. The Ibrox manager was furious with the official after Beaton handed Aberdeen the free-kick which led to James Maddison’s late winner at Pittodrie last Sunday, after James Tavernier won the ball in a tackle on Jonny Hayes. The Englishman is now set to sit out tomorrow’s Premiership clash with Partick Thistle.

Fifa Council: African soccer leaders elected Guinea’s Almamy Kabele Camara and Ghana’s Kwesi Nyantakyi yesterday to represent the continent on the expanded 36-member FIFA Council. Camara, the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) second vice president, and Ghana FA president Nyantakyi will complete a seven-member African delegation at an October 13-14 gathering of the FIFA Council.

Mowbray: Tony Mowbray has resigned as manager of League One club Coventry City. The 52-year-old has decided to part company with the Sky Blues following a disappointing start to the season which has left the club bottom of the table with just six points and no wins from their 10 league matches. Mowbray leaves with a record of 26 wins, 26 defeats and 24 draws from his 76 matches as manager.

Ramsey: Aaron Ramsey will again be absent when Wales continue their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign against Austria and Georgia next week. The Arsenal midfielder has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury last month. Ramsey has not been included in manager Chris Coleman’s squad for the Austria game in Vienna next Thursday, which is followed by a Cardiff appointment with Georgia three days later.
