Golf: Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy (picture) capped a stunning comeback with a birdie at the fourth play-off hole to win the season-ending Tour Championship on Sunday, along with FedExCup honours and the mind-boggling $10 million bonus. McIlroy rolled in a 15-foot putt at East Lake’s par-four 16th to beat American Ryan Moore, sending the large gallery into a frenzy that might more likely be expected at this week’s Ryder Cup. “It was incredible,” McIlroy said at the victory presentation. “Sorry for the hoarse voice. I sort of lost my voice screaming at the end. I feel my game is coming together at the right time. Two wins in the last three feels pretty nice.”

Formula One: American marketing executive Zak Brown, who has been linked to a role in Formula One after Liberty Media’s takeover, announced yesterday he was stepping down from his current role as head of CSM Sport&Entertainment at the end of the year. Brown said in a statement that he would take his experience “forward to my next chapter in the arena I know best, motorsport.” Formula One is facing a major shake-up after US cable TV mogul John Malone’s Liberty Media agreed this month to take control.

Ice Hockey: Team Europe extended their unthinkable run at the World Cup of Hockey with a stunning 3-2 overtime win over favoured Sweden on Sunday to earn a surprise berth in the best-of three final against hosts Canada. The ragtag group of players from eight different countries were the popular pick to finish last out of the eight teams but that did not keep them from pulling off the tournament’s biggest upset over a Swedish team that won silver at the 2014 Olympics.

Snooker: The winner of snooker’s new English Open next month will receive the Steve Davis Trophy, in tribute to one of the sport’s all-time greats who retired this year. The English Open has been introduced as part of the brand new Home Nations Series and will see the best in the world battling it out at Event City in Manchester from October 10-16, 2016.
