Snooker: Mark Selby came from 5-3 down to beat Stuart Bingham 6-5 and reach the final of the Shanghai Masters. A clash between the top two ranked players in the world produced a thrilling finish as Selby took the last three frames to earn a final meeting with Ding Junhui who beat Stephen Maguire 6-3 in the other semi-final. Victory today would give Selby a ninth career ranking crown along with the £85,000 top prize.

Tennis: The French Tennis Federation (FFT) has extended Benoit Paire’s suspension until the end of February 2017 for “damaging” the organisation’s image by his behaviour at the Rio Olympics. The FFT, however, lifted bans on Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic who were sanctioned for criticising the organisation following a mix-up over their clothing in a first-round women’s doubles loss at the Games. Paire was kicked out of his country’s Olympic team for spending too much time away from the athletes’ village.

Motorcycling: Championship leader Marc Marquez took a dominant pole position for Honda at Spain’s MotorLand Aragon circuit, with MotoGP’s run of eight different winners in eight races looking likely to end in today’s race. The Spaniard was joined on the front row for the 14th  round of the season by compatriots Maverick Vinales, for Suzuki, and Yamaha’s reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Olympics: The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has decided to set up five new sub offices to enable it to function effectively while the row with the Kuwait government continues over its headquarters in the Gulf State. Kuwait was suspended by the IOC in 2015 after the government was accused of interference in its national Olympic Committee, which has subsequently been dissolved. The OCA Executive Board has now decided to set up offices in Bangkok, Almaty, Delhi and Nansha (China) as well as in Lausanne.

Basket, NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett announced his retirement after 21 NBA seasons, leaving behind a legacy of ultimate intensity and defensive prowess. Garnett brought down the curtain on his career via a farewell video on Instagram. “I’m just thankful man, I can’t ever put that into words,” the 40-year-old said. Garnett’s departure is the latest in a year which also saw future Hall of Fame players Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan bid adieu to the NBA. Reports said that Garnett, who was signed for $8 million this season, had reached a contract settlement with the Timberwolves on Friday.
