I refer to the interview with the chairman of the ERA, Victor Axiaq (The Sunday Times of Malta, September 18), and the Talking Point by Townsquare Sliema Ltd. director Andrew Ganado (Times of Malta, September 21).

I read Mr Axiaq’s interview with interest but also with sadness at the poverty of some of his arguments, and I am only criticising him in his role as ERA chairman. Given the importance of his presence at the now infamous meeting to approve the Sliema and Mrieħel towers, I believe he should have realised that his vote would be crucial to the outcome.

How could a chairman of such a vital entity leave something like that to chance? What kind of professionalism is this? How can someone in his position say that with hindsight he should have given his letter with his views on the matter to the meeting’s chairman? I consider his behaviour to be very amateurish and a great letdown to all of us.

Furthermore, while I welcome the ERA’s decision to appeal the Sliema project, why didn’t it also appeal the Mrieħel towers project? How can Prof. Axiaq say that ERA’s best chances lie in appealing the Sliema high-rise decision only?

The fact that the Mrieħel Towers project lacked public consultation should be enough for an appeal. I’m sorry Prof. Axiaq, we have been terribly let down. Perhaps the ERA can do something about it now at this late hour?

One final word about Mr Ganado’s charm offensive to woo public sentiment and Sliema residents in particular. He doesn’t seem to understand the public outrage, disgust and incredulity. We don’t need more senseless towers which will encourage even more towers which will slowly but surely choke us to death.

No amount of rationalisation, assurances and sweet talk can disguise the greed that lies behind this monstrous project.
