Unemployment down by more than a quarter in August

Unemployment in August reached 3,261 from 4,914 in the same month last year, the NSO said today.

There was a decrease of 1,460 persons registering under Part I of the unemployment register and 193 among those registering under Part II. Decreases were recorded among all age groups.

The largest decrease was recorded among persons who had been registering for over one year. The number of persons with a disability who were registering for work also decreased by 40 to 362.

The largest share of men on the unemployment register sought occupations as clerical support workers (17.7 per cent), the same as women (32.6 per cent).

The registered unemployment rate in March 2016 stood at 2.2 per cent of the labour supply (excluding part-time employment), and varied from 2.6 per cent among men to 1.6 per cent among women.
