Gżira local council is joining forces with activists from Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent for a protest this coming Saturday at Manoel Island.

The protest will begin at 10.30am, with protestors adamant that access to Manoel Island's foreshore should be opened "immediately".

Activists broke padlocks and opened up access to the foreshore two weeks ago, following protests by residents which were backed by the local council. A subsequent attempt to clean up the site with the help of volunteers had to be cancelled, with new locks and a significant police presence preventing activists from accessing the area.

"[Development consortium] MIDI have been illegally denying access to Manoel Island for the past 16 years. We now need to show that MIDI isn’t going to fool us any longer and demand that access is opened immediately," the local council and Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent said in a statement announcing the protest.
