GZIRA UNITED-3, PEMBROKE ATHLETA-0

Gzira United gained their second win of the season after hammering Pembroke Athleta 3-0.

Missing a host of regular players through injury and suspension, Gzira United appeared to be facing an uphill battle but Branko Nisevic's men grew in stature in the second half, scoring three goals to leave Pembroke without a point after five games.

Pembroke Athleta had dominated possession in the first half but the best chance fell to Gzira United on 32 minutes.

In a counter-attack, Karl Pulo advanced on the left wing before serving Moises Avila Perez who looked certain to score but fired wide.

Gzira settled as the first half progressed. They started the second period in brisk mode.

Avila Perez headed wide from Jacob Borg's cross and Jonathan Bondin shot wide.

The Maroons opened the scoring on 62 minutes thanks to Yanis Tonna who controlled a long pass before beating Mario Muscat with a firm shot.

It was all Gzira now. They doubled their lead 13 minutes from time when Avila Perez squared the ball to Liliu, on as a substitute, and the Brazilian fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

Pembroke threw in the towel while Gzira pushed for more.

Avila Perez was denied by the woodwork after being sent clear by Gianmarco Conti but, six minutes from time, Gzira increased their lead through Juan Corbalan who blasted home from close range after Muscat had parried away an effort from Conti.

Avila Perez, the Gzira United captain, was named BOV player of the match.
