Swieqi Phoenix recently participated in the 20th edition of the prestigious Eotvos Cup, an Under-20 volleyball tournament held annually in Debrecen, Hungary.

“The Maltese girls, all members of the country’s leading volleyball nursery, last season’s winners of the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 national leagues, finished a creditable 10th from 32 participating teams,” Swieqi Phoenix said in a statement.

Commenting on the participation of Swieqi Phoenix in the Hungary tournament, club president Orlando Bonnici said: “We are proud that our young players managed to keep up with some of the best Under-20 teams, mainly from eastern Europe.

“The luck of the draw meant that we had to battle mostly with the Polish teams there and the fact that our girls had a record of four victories and three defeats, all close, says a lot about the girls’ technical level, fighting spirit and character.”

The final day of the tournament, which determined the 10th place ranking, saw the Swieqi Phoenix girls defeat the Debrecen-based Tiszaujvairosi Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium 2-1 (26-24, 18-25, 15-5).

Swieqi then lost to Polish team KS AZS-AWF Wroclaw 2-0 (25-18, 25-23) in another hard fought match.

Meanwhile, the club’s investment in Malta’s only youth beachvolley academy, supported by MSV Life and Mapfre Middlesea, also bore fruit in Hungary during the Eotvos Beachvolley Cup tournament.

Phoenix Youth Beachvolley Academy players Ivana and Tamara Kenkovski claimed the runners-up spot in the Under-18 category.

They achieved a string of victories before losing to a strong Romanian pair in the final.

Mariana Zammit Munro and Darina Ilieva, also representing Phoenix in the U-18 beach volleyball competition, finished fifth out of 16 teams.
