On the occasion of Malta’s Independence Day celebrations, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will be holding a concert tomorrow at Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta.

Conducted by the MPO’s principal conductor, Brian Schembri, the event will feature concerti written for the tuba, saxophone and euphonium, instruments which, though commonly found in Malta’s many band clubs, rarely take centre stage in symphonic concerts.

The pieces being presented are: Arutiunian’s Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra featuring Chris Spiteri; Maurice’s Tableaux de Provence featuring Philip Attard on the saxophone; and Jenkins’ Euphonium Concerto featuring George Camilleri.

In addition to the three concerti, the orchestra will also perform Joseph Vella’s Rebbieħa (Victorious), a work which has certain patriotic connotations and depicts how the country has always managed to emerge victorious despite its various tribulations.

■ The concert starts at 8pm and entrance is free. However, tickets must be obtained from Arts Council Malta. For more information, call 2124 4473 or send an e-mail to info@maltaorchestra.com.
