This time of the year allows for a magical experience at one of Malta’s premier prehistoric sites, the Mnajdra Temples in Qrendi.

The South Temple at Mnajdra is aligned in a manner that marks the position of sunrise on the first day of each season, the spring and autumn equinoxes and the summer and winter solstices.

This means that the rising sun casts its light down the main entrance as it shafts right through, an incredible feat of engineering well over 5,000 years old.

Heritage Malta opens up the temple for visitors to partake of this unique phenomenon early in morning during these important solar calendar periods.

Limited places are available for the autumn equinox and booking is required. The event is followed by a tour of the Visitor Centre and refreshments.

■ The event is being held on Thursday and Friday at 5.30am. There is still availability for Friday’s event at the time of going to print. Tickets are available from all Heritage Malta sites and museums and online at http://shop.heritagemalta.org. For more information, contact Heritage Malta on 2142 4231.
