The Grand Harbour Regeneration Committee was responsible for the restoration of Fort St Elmo, which was concluded last year.

This project originally included the reconstruction of the once famous St Elmo Lighthouse. Unfortunately, this unique and impressive landmark in Valletta was dismantled during World War II and has not been rebuilt as planned.

It is believed that the original sum budgeted for this project was not big enough. Instead of trying to find the necessary funds, the present administration seems to have abandoned this project completely.

Many projects are under way to be completed for the Valletta 2018 festivities, yet the reconstruction of this monumental structure, which was visible from Valletta’s Main Gate, has now been put aside.

If St Elmo Lighthouse were to be rebuilt in time for the Valletta 2018 festivities, it would provide an important attraction. A fee of €5 charged to visitors would cover part of the expenses.

I appeal to the Prime Minister to reconsider the rebuilding of St Elmo Lighthouse. This would not only enhance the beauty of our Grand Harbour but would give back to the city of Valletta one of its most impressive landmarks.

Now is the chance to have it back. Let us not miss this opportunity.
