Lyon have broken off talks to sign former Arsenal and Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Ligue 1 club had considered a move for the 32-year-old free agent due to Alexandre Lacazette’s injury, despite also signing 19-year-old Jean-Philippe Mateta from third-tier Chateauroux.

Adebayor met with Bruno Genesio on Friday, after the coach’s pre-match press conference in which he said the striker “could indeed” sign for the club but added: “I have a lot of questions for him, especially concerning his time at Crystal Palace. I want to know what kind of form he is in and what would motivate him to join us.”

That conversation has ended Adebayor’s hopes of a move to Parc OL, the club confirmed.

A statement read: “After the injury to Alexandre Lacazette, the club looked into the arrival of at least one new striker.

“The arrival of the young prospect Jean-Philippe Mateta fits perfectly with this strategy while the Togo international, who would not be eligible for the first stage of the Champions League, confirmed he wishes to play in the African Nations Cup in early 2017 which would mean an absence of a month or two.”
