A musical with a difference is set to take to the stage this weekend exploring old Maltese myths and fairy tales, scored to some of the biggest hits in rock music.
Set in the 16th century, Belliegħa tells the story of three children from the Inguanez family, Lucia, Maria and Tinu. Lucia is the eldest and betrothed to a young noble, Mikiel, despite being secretly in love with Ġamri, the baker’s son. Disaster strikes when Maria and Tinu, the two younger children, go missing, pulled down a well by Belliegħa. The children must be rescued, but the delicate balance between the two worlds is upset and a few dark secrets are uncovered in the process.
The myth of Belliegħa is of a legendary well dweller used to scare young children into staying away from wells. Other creatures from the underworld make their appearance including Sarangu (the sackman), Babaw (the bogeyman) and Saħħara (the witch).
The 60-strong cast will perform the songs live in their entirety, accompanied by a band made up of some of the island’s best musicians.
The audience can expect to hear smash hits from the likes of Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd and Queen to name a few.
■ Belliegħa is being staged today and tomorrow at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, Valletta, at 8pm. The musical is performed in the English language. Tickets for the production are available from www.ticketline.com.mt.
