The authorities acted quickly today to set up new sections of a wire fence around an area in danger of collapse in Għar Lapsi after Times of Malta reported that parts of the fence had disappeared.

In November 2011, a large section of the cliff face located just a stone’s throw to the right of the popular bathing spot at Għar Lapsi crashed into the sea late at night. No one was injured, but fresh concerns were raised in the wake of Monday’s incident in St Paul’s Bay that left a nine-year-old girl fighting for her life after being hit by falling rocks while she was swimming.

Photographs taken by the Times of Malta two days ago at the popular beach in the limits of Siġġiewi showed how the protective wire fence meant to keep the dangerous part of a jetty out of bounds had been removed.

People were sunbathing right below the unstable overhanging rocks, seemingly oblivious to the danger.

The director general at the Works Department at the Infrastructure Ministry, architect Ray Farrugia, pledged that the fence would be repaired with immediate effect, and action was taken this morning.
