Malta’s Under-17 squad departed for Portugal yesterday afternoon ahead of their participation in a 2016/17 UEFA Championship mini-tournament competition.

Scotland, Wales and hosts Portugal are the other teams in Group 10.

Silvio Vella, the Malta U-17 coach who is assisted by Ronald Vella, has taken an 18-strong squad to Portugal.

Wing-back Romario Camilleri, who joined Italian club Frosinone in the close season, is the only foreign-based player in the selection.

The Maltese youngsters launch their commitments with a match against Scotland tomorrow at 15.00 in Febres before facing Portugal on Sunday (17.00) in Coimbra. Their remaining match is against Wales next Wednesday.

In this qualifying round, the top two teams from each pool progress to the elite stage along with the five third-placed sides with the best record against the leading pair in their groups.
