I refer to the caption story titled ‘Tourist takes a risk above Valletta Ditch – and up goes an eyesore’ (September 10).

Kindly note that with regard to the ongoing restoration of the two main bridges at the Valletta Ditch, fencing was installed along the bridge as a temporary safety precaution.

This was done after the contractor notified the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation that he had reached a stage of scaffolding at the upper part of the City Gate bridge. In view of this, there was high concern that this could present potential risk to passers-by because it could be possible for a person to jump from the bridge onto the scaffolding without a major effort. (The caption story in question is a clear example.)

As explained in a press release issued by the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure last week, (which the Times of Malta did not publish), the fencing is a temporary measure for health and safety reasons and will be removed once the ditch project is completed.

In the coming days, GHRC will be stepping its measures to minimise the eyesore as much as possible.
