Chelsea long-serving captain John Terry has been ruled out for around 10 days with strained ligaments in his foot and will miss next Friday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool, the London club said yesterday.

The 35-year-old, who has played all four of Chelsea’s league games this season, left the Liberty Stadium on crutches in the closing minutes of Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Swansea City on Sunday.

“John Terry’s injury suffered in Sunday’s game at Swansea is strained ligaments in his foot. He will be out for approximately 10 days,” the club said.

West Ham demand police presence

West Ham have demanded that London Stadium owners E20 guarantee a police presence at future matches following crowd trouble during Saturday’s 4-2 league defeat to Watford.

An unspecified number of fans were ejected from the London Stadium after fights broke out in the closing stages of the game, although the Met Police have stated there were no arrests.

“West Ham United undertook a full investigation into the crowd issues immediately after Saturday’s game with Watford and today held a productive meeting with stadium owners E20,” said a statement.

“Today, the club have insisted that E20 guarantee a police presence in the stadium.”

West Ham United supporters are unhappy at the stewarding and being unable to stand as they did at Upton Park.

Hansa chief blasts ‘stupid’ supporters

Hansa Rostock chief executive Robert Marien has labelled fans who displayed an image of Osama Bin Laden during Friday’s draw with Aalen “stupid”.

A large poster of the former Al Qaeda leader was held up in the away fans’ section at the game in the German third tier, which took place two days before the 15th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Marien told reporters: “This was an utterly tasteless and stupid action.”

Hansa fans have previously displayed images of Bin Laden. The practice stems from anti-American sentiment after Rostock was heavily bombed during the Second World War.

Everton donation

Everton have pledged £200,000 to help the family of a five-year-old Sunderland fan pay for cancer treatment in the US.

Fund-raisers are attempting to collect £700,000 to help Bradley Lowery, who was Sunderland’s mascot in their 3-0 defeat against the Toffees at the Stadium of Light on Monday evening.

And the Merseyside club have made a massive donation to boost the fund after learning of Bradley’s fight.

Dier extends Spurs contract to 2021

England midfielder Eric Dier has signed a new contract keeping him at Tottenham Hotspur until 2021, the Premier League club announced.

The 22-year-old, who joined the North Londoners from Sporting Lisbon in 2014, previously had a contract to 2020.

Dier has made 87 appearances for Spurs, scoring six goals, and made his full England debut last November.

Tottenham finished third in the Premier League last season and play Monaco in their opening Champions League Group E match at Wembley today.

Neville may never return to coaching

Gary Neville may never return to coaching after being “chucked overboard” by England and faring badly in a short spell as Valencia boss, he said.

The former Manchester United full-back left his role as England’s assistant manager after the team’s dismal Euro 2016 showing in June and was sacked after picking up just three wins in 16 La Liga games in charge of Valencia last season.

“I always say ‘never say never’ because my love of football is too great but I genuinely believe it will be very difficult for me to go back into coaching because of my commitment to so many different things,” Neville said.

“I can’t go back into coaching now in the short term, the next five years, and the reality of it is I don’t want to.”

Non-League defender collapses on pitch

Non-league defender Daniel Wilkinson has died after collapsing on the field, his club Shaw Lane have announced.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the Northern Premier League Division One South side said that Wilkinson, 26, “passed away after collapsing on the pitch” during a game on Monday night.

The league’s official website said the player “suffered a suspected heart attack” and was treated by medics for over 30 minutes before being taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.

Barnsley-based Shaw Lane were facing Brighouse in a local cup match.
