Luke Gambin played a leading role as Barnet won 1-0 at Mansfield in the English League Two last Saturday.

The Malta winger, restored to the Bees’ starting formation by manager Martin Allen, picked out John Akinde on the right wing and the burly striker drilled the ball home for the all-important goal on 57 minutes.

Gambin, who turned down a move to Leyton Orient in the final days of the summer transfer window, made way for Jamal Campbell-Ryce 20 minutes from time as Barnet held out for their first win in 16 years at the Once Call Stadium.

Victory lifted Barnet to 13th place on nine points, three points outside the promotion play-off places.

Sam Magri helped Dover Athletic grind out a thrilling 4-3 win over Forest Green in the National League in England. The Malta Under-21 defender, starting at right-back, played for 69 minutes as Dover edged the promotion hopefuls courtesy of a Ricky Miller hat-trick and a goal from Ross Lafayette.

Dover are eighth in the standings on 16 points, five adrift of leaders Lincoln City and two points off a promotion play-off spot.

Chris Kinnear’s men will again be in action this evening as Dover Athletic travel to Dagenham and Redbridge.

Andrè Schembri began his fourth league match for Boavista who crashed to a 3-0 defeat to Braga in the Portuguese Primeira Liga on Sunday night.

The Malta striker played for 74 minutes before he was replaced but could not help his team maintain their unbeaten start to the season as Braga hit three goals in the opening 68 minutes to remain second in the standings on 10 points, two down on leaders Sporting Lisbon.

Boavista, 10th on five points, will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season when they host lowly Feirense on Sunday.

Defender Zach Muscat played no part in Arezzo’s come-from-behind 2-1 win over Siena in a Lega Pro Group A match on Saturday.

Horacio Erpen was Arezzo’s hero as the Argentine midfielder struck twice in the final 17 minutes to help the Reds take all points against Siena who had Roberto Masullo sent off on 77 minutes.

The result left Arezzo second in the standings on seven points, two adrift of Alessandria who have won their opening three games.

Muscat, who is yet to start a league game since his close-season move to Arezzo, will hope to be involved tomorrow when his team travel to Alessandria in a top-of-the-table clash.
