Expect to see traffic police at key traffic hotspots in the weeks to come, as schools reopen and Malta's roads fill up with additional vehicles.  

A large contingent of traffic police, aided by Transport Malta officials, will be sent to key areas affected by large volumes of cars, entering and exiting students or infrastructural projects to aid the flow of traffic, the Transport Ministry said in a statement issued this morning. 

The decision to deploy additional traffic police was taken following a meeting between Transport Minister Joe Mizzi, police commissioner Laurence Cutajar, LESA representatives, education sector representatives and Transport Malta officials. 

Police will direct traffic during peak hours on arterial roads outside Valletta and Floriana, Marsa, Paola, Kappara, San Ġwann, Mosta, Rabat and Birkirkara bypass. 

The minister asked motorists to respect one another as well as the highway code and to ensure they didn't obstruct traffic flows when parking their car. He urged people to use alternative forms of transport or to carpool. Drivers carrying a minimum of two passengers can make use of priority lanes, he noted.
