Saving one penalty makes a goalkeeper a strong contender for man of the match.

But making not two, but three penalty saves in 90 minutes is a sure-fire way of becoming a club legend.

Dundee United goalkeeper Cammy Bell parried his way into supporters' hearts yesterday with a hat-trick of penalty saves - all in the first half.

The heroic display ensured his team beat Dunfermline 3-1 in the Scottish Championship.

Bell saved a first penalty after just 9 minutes, before blocking penalty attempts by Nicky Clark and Paul McMullan in the 25th and 32nd minutes respectively.

Not content with having gifted their opponents three chances to score from the spot, Dundee then had a man sent off on the hour mark.

But the Tangerines held their opponents off and won the game, sending them up to fourth in the table.

Bell's heroics saw Dundee win 3 points, which is more than can be said for a similar performance by Belgian shot-stopper Jean-Francois Gillet.

Mechelen's Gillet played a blinder in an October 2015 fixture against Anderlecht, saving three penalties. But the performance of a lifetime only got his team a solitary point, with Mechelen unable to go beyond 1-1.
