Manoel Island was turned into a hive of activity today after access to the foreshore was restored yesterday by Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent.

Activists yesterday cut locks to make their way in, in a bid to ensure that access to the island would remain open.

The action followed a protest against the blocking of access to the coastline by private consortium MIDI by Gżira residents earlier in the week. The activists camped on site to ensure access would remain open.

Access was sealed when MIDI was given the concession to the island 16 years ago. The concession had been given on condition that development would be carried out and access would remain open.

The public yesterday used the previously inaccessible area to cycle, fish, jog, walk their dogs, swim and enjoy themselves.
