Like so many others interested in archaeology, I was saddened by the passing away of David Trump. He was a lifelong friend of Malta and has contributed a lot to our knowledge of our past.

He was a year my junior and in our 20s we used to hang out together so that I am aware of other facets of him that may not be known to those who know him as an academic, which he primarily was.

David was great company and very popular at parties. He was an agile contortionist and a great story teller. He was particularly good at shaggy dog stories. His best was probably the “rary” story, set on the cliffs of Dover and which ended, after some 15 minutes, “it’s a long way to tip a rary”.
