The Malta Consumers and Competition Authority said today that it is still considering the possibility of holding an investigation into the VW emissions scandal and how it affected local car-owners, but it would prefer to join EU-wide action since this was an issue of the Single Market.

The MCCAA issued its statement after the Consumers' Association insisted yesterday that local VW owners should be compensated in the same way as American car owners.

The authority said it has been following the case since the outset, including the actions taken by VW in Malta and the actions of the European Commission. The Commission recently requested information from all EU member states so that coordinated action could be taken.

The authority said that while it preferred this coordinated approach, it was considering holding an investigation in terms of the law about unfair commercial practices.
