Tennis: Ana Ivanovic (picture, right) has brought an early end to her season to address wrist and toe problems. The former world number one has had a very disappointing year, winning just 15 matches and slipping from 16th in the rankings to 31st. Ivanovic wrote on Twitter: “I have some disappointing news to share with you. “Unfortunately, due to my recurring wrist injury, I have been advised by  to take some time off the court in order to recover and regain my full strength.”

Athletics: Bruno Hortelano’s agent has dismissed speculation that the European 200-metre champion could lose his hand after being involved in a car crash on Monday. There have been suggestions that Hortelano’s injuries could result in the 24-year-old’s right hand being amputated, but his representative says that is not the case. Alberto Armas tweeted: “I would like to clarify the information about the state of Bruno Hortelano. He is in good spirits and although the state of his hand is serious, it’s not going to result in the extreme which is appearing in some ‘media reports’.”

Davis Cup: Andy Murray is set to return to Great Britain’s Davis Cup team for this month’s semi-final against Argentina in Glasgow. The world no.2, who sat out the quarter-final in Serbia in July following his Wimbledon triumph, was named in a provisional five-man team alongside Kyle Edmund, Dan Evans, Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot.

Golf: Rory McIlroy ended a 16-month title drought on the PGA Tour with a brilliant last-day charge as he won the Deutsche Bank Championship by two shots in Norton, Massachusetts. A distant six strokes behind over-night leader Paul Casey heading into the final round, McIlroy fired a six-under-par 65 to post a 15-under total of 269. The world no.5 ended his round in style, hitting a bunker shot to within two feet at the par-five 18th for a tap-in four, his seventh birdie of the day, as he clinched his 12th PGA Tour victory.
