Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning paid tribute to Malta’s second Prime Minister, Francesco Buhagiar, on the occasion of his 140th anniversary of his birth. He laid flowers on his grave at the Addolorata Cemetery.

Dr Buhagiar was elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 1921 and 1924 elections in the interests of the Unione Popolare Maltese.

On October 13, 1922 he was appointed Minister of Justice and a year later succeeded Senator Joseph Howard as Prime Minister.

Francesco Buhagiar was highly respected by his political opponents. His career on the Bench also earned him a reputation as a distinguished jurist.
