Why is the ugly duckling considered lesser than the swan, when both go through the same experience, asks an illustration in the foyer of the new Parliament building.

The drawing, by Nicole Pisani, showing a black duckling and a white swan, is one of the series of sketches inspired by the European Union’s motto “United in diversity”.

Promoting equality in spite of differences and varied beliefs, the exhibition by Qormi and St Paul’s Bay Skolasajf students will be open until September 14.

Launching the exhibition yesterday, Speaker of the House Anġlu Farrugia referred to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, drafted in 1948 as a response to the two world wars.

Everyone has the right to a decent life... We have to ensure a kinder society

“This declaration insists that there should not be a distinction between people, as they are all born free and equal. They should work together, driven by the spirit of brotherhood as one family,” he said.

Despite nearly 70 years passing since the declaration, conflict is still rampant and there are still oppressive governments which treat people in an undignified manner. Instead of looking at our differences, we should try to make our lives better by appreciating and being of help to each other, Dr Farrugia added.

Speaking at the same event, Civil Liberties Minister Helena Dalli said that the children’s positive attitude towards diversity should not be hampered by adults.

“Everyone has the right to live a decent life, irrespective of their race, religion, abilities and sexual orientation, and we have to ensure a kinder society, where every person is supported to reach their full potential,” she said.

The exhibition, held in collaboration with Meusac and the Representation of the European Commission in Malta, is open from Monday to Saturday between 9am and 5pm, and on Sundays from 9am till noon.
