Local research into Alzheimer's, epilepsy and other central nervous system diseases has been given a boost thanks to an agreement between the University of Malta and the University of Warwick.

The agreement will see the two universities exchange students and researchers, with both institutes also keen to establish joint M.Sc and Ph.D programmes in neuroscience research.

"In many areas of neuroscience there are similarities in approach at Malta and at Warwick and the collaboration will be very profitable in furthering research," the University of Malta said in a statement.

The first exchange of students is expected to take place in January 2017 and the programme in its final form will be presented at the 6th Mediterranean Neuroscience Society Conference, to be held in June 2017 in St Julian's.

Discussions were led by the University of Malta's Professor Giuseppe Di Giovanni and Warwick's Dr Martin Spillane and Professor Bruno Frenguelli.

Rector Alfred Vella and pro-rector Godfrey Baldacchino - himself a Warwick alumni - have given the collaboration their full support.
