I nearly witnessed a double fatality in Birkirkara Road, Kappara on August 20 at about 9pm.

A driver nearly ran over a lady with a baby in a pushchair using the pedestrian crossing. The driver could only have been at fault for his excessive speed. The major fault lies with Enemalta.

The crossing cannot be spotted at night because it has been unlit for a long time because the electricity feed has, for some strange reason, been stopped from the main system. Enemalta have been made aware of this some time ago (reference number 25498-MOPO58), however, no action has been taken so far.

The motorist in question did not realise he was approaching a zebra crossing and, therefore, did not expect someone to be crossing the road.

Had the accident occurred, would the driver have been arraigned for running over somebody on a zebra crossing when, through the neglect of Enemalta, he could not even see the crossing? His only fault would have been excessive speed. And this is another thing that the authorities should look into.

The residents of Birkirkara Road and Hilda Street – both in Kappara – are witnessing speeding vehicles, especially at night, including motorcycles.

When will the necessary action be taken? Does a serious accident have to take place first? How about installing speed cameras in both roads?
