Two people were hospitalised, one of them grievously, following an accident in Sliema this afternoon, the police said.

The accident happened around 3pm at the crossroads between Triq Depiro and Triq Injazju, the force of the impact forcing the two vehicles - a Peugeot 106 and a Nissan - to crash into opposing walls.

A 49-year-old woman from Sliema was rushed to hospital in grievous condition but her injuries are not life-threatening, the police said. The Nissan's Italian 37-year-old driver, also a Sliema resident, was lightly injured while his 22-year-old French passenger walked away unscathed.

A resident told timesofmalta.com: "The situation of the bottom of Depiro Street and Trejqet Sant Injazju has been a constant concern... Residents have made numerous requests to the local council to install measures to slow down traffic. Today's incident was by far the worst out of the three or four this year. Luckily there were no fatalities but is that what it will take for action to be taken?"

Police are investigating.
