I refer to the article ‘Competition watchdog left powerless’ (August 30).

The Competition Office within the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority would like to reiterate that it has continued to perform its functions, including that of investigating possible breaches of the Competition Act.

Though it is currently not in a position to impose any fines when it finds any breach of the Competition Act, it is still in a position to issue a decision or to require remedial action, as the case may be, from any undertaking to ensure compliance with the law.

Editorial note: The article in question did quote an MCCAA spokesman saying that the Competition Office is still conducting investigations “and may issue[a] decision”.
