The European Week of Sport is an initiative led by the European Commission to promote sport and physical activity across Europe.

2016 will mark its second edition, continuing to generate new activities while building on already existing successful ones. The overarching campaign theme remains #BeActive, encouraging everyone to be active during the Week but also to keep it up all year long. It also aims to promote participation in sport and physical activity regardless of age, background or fitness level, bringing together individuals, public authorities, the sport movement, civil society organisations and the private sector.

The 2016 European Week of Sport will continue to be structured around focused areas, being: the education environment, the workplace, outdoors, sport clubs and fitness centres.

This year, Malta’s week kicks off on September 10, which is also when the official opening to this pan-European initiative will take place in Košice, Slovakia.

As part of the activities being organised, SportMalta is coordinating three promenade walks to promote walking as a path to a healthy lifestyle. The walks will be held on Monday, September 12 in Buġibba; Wednesday, September 14 in Sliema; and Friday, September 16, in Marsascala between 6pm and 9pm.

All three promenades will have two meeting points from where participants can start or finish. Applications can be filled online at this link: goo.gl/ucsRfa.

Another activity requiring pre-registration is the Tug-of-War being held on Saturday, September 10, at Pretty Bay, Birżebbuġa, from 8pm to 10pm. To apply for this activity, visit this link: goo.gl/8s52IA

Those wishing to take part in either event must apply by Monday, September 5.
