The Malta Tourism Authority is hoping new signage, a webcam and an information campaign will deter people from walking across Gozo's iconic Azure Window.

Concerns about the limestone arch's erosion - a large chunk fell off it in 2012 - have led to growing calls for people to be banned from walking across it.

But while there is some support for the idea, the Gozo Tourism Authority has said it has no way of enforcing such a ban.

Now the MTA has joined forces with the GTA, recently-reestablished Dwejra Committee and Nature Trust Malta to raise awareness about the need to protect this iconic site.

Planned actions include:

  • Improvement in on-site signage
  • Information on visitmalta.com and other websites
  • Social media messages
  • Information flyers on Gozo Channel ferries
  • An on-site webcam to monitor the area

Travel trade operators on the MTA's database will also be asked to discourage visitors from walking across the limestone arch, the MTA said in a statement.

Dwejra, which apart from the Azure Window also includes the inland sea and Fungus Rock, is a Natura 2000 site.
